Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to rest close to their babies at night, without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby will be ready to move to an actual bed.

Size

Cots and cot beds vary in terms of size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used by children up to the age of three. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes available - standard and large - both of which convert into a cot/toddler beds. If you'd like your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in a bigger cot, it's a great idea to pick the larger one.

Height

When choosing a bedside cot crib cot, look for one that can be raised up to a height that's comfortable for you when feeding baby. It should also be able to be lowered away from the way, so that you can pull your baby towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. While some mothers find it easier to get their babies out of the standard Moses baskets at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit larger than other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She said it was designed to be used by parents and babies. 'It has an excellent design that is very easy to manoeuvre and it is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's pivoting base was brilliant since it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

The main safety aspect of a large bedside cot is that it can be moved up or down to allow parents to reach their baby when they require to feed them, soothe them or change their nappy. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from a C-section. Find a model that lets you lower one side at the press of a button so you can easily lift your baby up without getting out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as duvets and pillowcases which could cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents) and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these beds satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However, the CPSC found that these requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers which can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets through the use of an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is examining these comments and bedside travel crib others received in response to the NPR on 4-in-1 bedside crib sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be issued in November of 2021.
