Evolution Korea

Up until recently the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to get information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their surroundings, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. This differing reproduction may, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the manner described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs aren't as well-known, but their beliefs are just as passionate as the YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." This theory states that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event known as the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were all created at the same time and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they would remove references to evolution in their editions. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
