Evolution Korea

In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over time, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The term "evolution" originates from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took shape in the sciences and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the growth in muscle mass from diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they're not passed on to future generations.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. Then these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution in their books. STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
