How to Replace Door Handles

Door Knobs

The handles on your doors will improve the look of your home and allow you to open and shut them. They come in a variety of finishes, colors and styles to match your decor. You need to locate the shaft, or spindle, through which the knob is attached to the door. Latch

If your handle does not have this magic button you will need to remove the cover plates placed over the latch plate. They are typically circular or rectangular and can be removed using a screwdriver in order to remove them off the handle. Some have a slot where you can place your screwdriver. Other handles simply snap off.

Next, you will want to remove the two machine screws holding the latch and the inner plate to the door handle. You'll need to keep these shorter screws with sharp tips in a secure location so that you can reuse them later. Once the screws are removed, you can take the latch plate as well as the mechanism from the hole, and then set it aside.

You can now begin installing the new latch. Insert the inside plate of the latch into the hole in the door and secure it using the hardware provided. Make sure that the square pin on interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism in the handle and aligns with the screw holes on the other sides of the handle. Then attach the latch's exterior plate with the provided screws.

Strike Plate

It is not uncommon to replace a door handle if it feels loose, or does not lock properly. This is usually due to malfunctioning components of the latching mechanism, for example an unbalanced strike plate that is too small or shifted upwards or downwards on the doorjamb over time. This project lets you replace your old strikeplate with a longer one, which will provide more security for your door and will keep it closed.

To determine if the issue is due to the strike plate, apply some lipstick or similar marking material to the latch bolt. Close the door and try to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate hole it indicates that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is higher than the strike plate hole, it's likely that the strike plate has been moved up or down on the doorjamb.
