In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an alternative.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. As time passes, this genetic variability can result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. Natural selection is the process that drives most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass from diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.

Eventually, these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.
